Where should a first-timer stay in NYC: Midtown Convenience or Brooklyn Character?

I’m thinking about how much a hotel location shapes the entire energy of a New York trip. On one hand, Midtown or Lower Manhattan makes total sense for a first visit because it’s practical, close to the classic sights, and keeps transportation simple, even if it feels a bit chaotic and touristy.

On the other hand, Brooklyn gives you that authentic neighborhood character, an amazing casual food scene, and a slower pace. The only catch is that you will definitely spend more time commuting if your itinerary is Manhattan heavy.

For those who know the city: Is it better to stick to the tourist hub for a first trip and save Brooklyn for the repeat visit, or is it worth staying across the bridge right from the start? What do you think?
