Tokyo Hotel Tip: Don’t Book the Area. Book the Station.

A lot of people choose a Tokyo hotel by searching for famous areas first: Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Asakusa.

That makes sense, but here’s the mistake: Tokyo is not a city where you only stay inside one neighborhood. You’ll probably be taking trains every day, sometimes two or three times a day.

So the hotel that feels “perfect” online can become annoying if it is a 12–15 minute walk from the station. That walk feels fine on Google Maps. It feels less fine when you are dragging luggage, carrying shopping bags, or coming back late after dinner.

What I’d check first is not just the area name, but the station.

Is the hotel within 5 minutes of the station?

Is the station on a line you’ll actually use?

Can you get to places like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo Station, Ueno, or Haneda/Narita without too many transfers?

Sometimes a hotel in a less famous area, but beside a good station, gives you a much better Tokyo trip than a hotel in a famous area that is far from the train.

In Tokyo, the best location is not always the coolest neighborhood. It is the one that makes every day easier.
