The Honest Guide to Visiting North Korea
North Korea is genuinely one of the most extraordinary and morally complex travel destinations on Earth. Access: foreigners must visit with a state-approved tour (Koryo Tours and Young Pioneer Tours are the main operators). You are never alone, guides accompany you everywhere. What you see: Pyongyang is genuinely impressive architecturally, and rural landscapes are beautiful. What you don't see: ordinary daily life, the reality of the country outside the curated showcase. The ethical question is real, your tourism money goes to the state. That said, some argue that any human contact between ordinary North Koreans and outside visitors is net positive. Decide for yourself.
