The Best Train Journeys in the World
Some train journeys feel less like transportation and more like the trip itself.
I’ve always loved the kind of route where you stop checking how long is left and just stare out the window instead. Mountains, lakes, small stations, people walking through the dining car, coffee that somehow tastes better because the view keeps changing.
In Europe, I’d put the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express, and Norway’s Flåm Railway high on the list. They are slow in the best possible way, the kind of trains where the scenery is the whole point.
In Asia, the Shinkansen is impressive for a different reason: clean, fast, quiet, almost unreal in how efficient it feels. Then there are more romantic routes like the Eastern & Oriental Express through Malaysia and Thailand, or the Darjeeling toy train in India.
In North America, the Rocky Mountaineer and the California Zephyr feel like proper long-distance travel, especially when the route starts opening up into mountains and wide landscapes.
If I had to pick one favorite, it would be the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano. It’s one of those train rides where the scenery does all the talking.
