Thailand Beyond Bangkok and Phuket

Thailand has incredible depth beyond its two most famous cities. The north: Chiang Rai for the White Temple and the Golden Triangle, Pai for mountains and hot springs, Mae Hong Son loop for serious off-the-beaten-path motorcycling. The northeast (Isan): completely tourist-free, extraordinary food (this is where som tum originated), Khao Yai National Park for elephants and gibbons, ancient Khmer temples. The Gulf islands: Koh Tao for diving, Koh Phangan beyond the full moon party, Koh Samui if you want the infrastructure. Budget: Thailand remains excellent value at $30-40/day comfortable outside the peak tourist circuit.
