Seoul Neighborhood Guide: Hongdae, Myeongdong, or Insadong?
The neighborhood you choose in Seoul can completely change how the trip feels.
If you stay in Hongdae, your days might start slowly with coffee in a small café, then turn into a night of street music, indie shops, casual bars, and people still walking around long after dinner. It feels young, creative, and a little chaotic in a good way.
Myeongdong feels different. It is busy, bright, and very easy for a first Seoul trip. You can walk out for street food, shop without much planning, and connect to other parts of the city easily. It may not feel the most local, but it makes the trip simple.
Then there is Insadong, which has a softer pace. Think quiet alleys, traditional teahouses, galleries, craft shops, and easy access to palaces. It is a better fit if you want Seoul to feel more cultural and less rushed.
For a first trip, I’d pick Myeongdong if convenience matters most, Hongdae if you want nightlife and energy, and Insadong if you want a calmer Seoul with more old-city charm.
