Rental car or trains for a first Europe trip?

I’m helping a friend plan their first Europe trip and they want to rent a car for flexibility.

I’m leaning toward trains because parking, city driving, and one-way rental fees sound stressful. For a route with Paris, Switzerland, and maybe northern Italy, would you rent a car at all or just use rail?
