Is it worth renting a car in Iceland, or should I just book day tours?

Planning a 5-day trip to Iceland in September to see the South Coast and Golden Circle. I'm debating whether to rent a 4x4 camper/car or just base myself in Reykjavik and do organized day tours. I'm a bit nervous about driving in unpredictable weather, but I also value flexibility and hate being stuck on a tour bus schedule with 40 other people. Is the driving manageable for someone used to standard US highway driving?
