How realistic is it to get upgraded to business class with American Airlines?

I’m already an AAdvantage member, but I’m still trying to understand how realistic upgrades actually are in real life.

I’ve read that AAdvantage status members can sometimes get complimentary upgrades if seats are available, but I’m curious how often that really happens. Does it mostly depend on having a higher status level, or have people with lower status also had luck getting upgraded to business class?

For anyone who has actually received an upgrade before, did you find out days before departure, during check-in, or only at the gate?

I’m not expecting upgrades every time, but if there is a real chance of getting upgraded by building status and collecting more Loyalty Points, I’d probably start booking more of my flights with American instead of spreading them across different airlines.

Would love to hear real experiences from people who have actually been upgraded.
