Bhutan: The Last Himalayan Kingdom
Bhutan is the most deliberately controlled tourism destination in the world. The government charges a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100/night (reduced from $200 in recent years) for most visitors, which covers accommodation and guides. This isn't a scam, it keeps mass tourism out and the environment pristine. What you experience: Paro Taktsang (the Tiger's Nest monastery clinging to a cliff face), the Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, traditional archery competitions in Thimphu, the complete absence of traffic lights anywhere in the country. Bhutan measures Gross National Happiness instead of GDP. It genuinely feels different from everywhere else.
