A Simple Rome Food Rule That Helped Me
I stopped choosing restaurants in Rome based on which place looked the busiest near the main sights. Around areas like the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona, it’s easy to end up somewhere that looks convenient but feels made for people who will never come back.
The simple rule that helped me was this: if the menu was too long, translated into too many languages, covered in food photos, or someone was standing outside trying to pull people in, I usually kept walking.
My better meals were often just a few streets away from the main crowd. The restaurants were smaller, the menus were shorter, and the food felt more focused. It didn’t always mean fancy or expensive. Sometimes it was just a simple pasta, house wine, and a waiter who wasn’t rushing the table.
For anyone who knows Rome well, what’s your best rule for finding a decent meal without over-planning every restaurant?
